Watch for frequent updates of these pages. The following is the introduction to an unfinished essay. It's no coincidence, as the international Lindy scene rapidly becomes smaller and smaller, amateur Lindy insiders are becoming cooler and cooler. As scene after local scene implodes (usually over a situation of "my fun is more fun than your fun"), individual "Lindy snobs" become more and more prominent. I'm not talking about professional teachers (or even part-time pros), but local dance-party and Lindy-exchange amateur promoters who are creating an atmosphere of exclusivity all around the world. In this climate, beginners must almost worship their amateur instructors, and therefore few people with any emotional maturity last long in most Lindy circles. The fires of this attitude have been fanned by one of the world's top instructors (who coincidentally expects worship treatment), as retribution against another instructor's desire to preserve old-style Lindy hop through standardization. As middle-aged enthusiasts, casual dancers, and physically-unattractive people are routinely excluded in a shameless, de facto dance segregation, promoters are unwittingly ensuring the end of any chance of Lindy Hop surviving anywhere outside the clutches of strict organizations. |
